NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES TIMELINE CONCERT OF THE MOMENT: w/ Crazy Horse at Bonnaroo Festival, TN - June 15, 2003

A new Timeline Concert of the Moment is now streaming on Neil Young Archives.  (Thanks the Road Dawg!)

The latest Timeline Concert is Neil Young and Crazy Horse at Bonnaroo Festival, TN on June 15, 2003.

Bonnaroo Journal from Knoxville News: "Neil Young and Crazy Horse hit the stage at 9:42 p.m. and opened with a 18 minute version of "Love to Burn." Crazy Horse - guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro, drummer Ralph Molina and Bassist Billy Talbot created a beautiful explosion of sound."

The New York Times said:

"Despite the revolving jam sessions, this was a crowd with a long attention span, and the festival's best stretches were when bands just held their own for long chunks of time. Neil Young, on Friday, performed with his three-decade-old band, Crazy Horse, under a custardy full moon. For three hours he played expanded versions, some of them 29 minutes long, of his best songs"Love to Burn," "Cortez the Killer," "Cinnamon Girl" and others. He was the only soloist, breaking to solo at length several times per song. Playing in his ragged, stuttering phrases, he made strings of notes crumble into noise, then recohere toward graceful endings. (The festival's excellent concert sound made his guitar tone feel a mile thick.) It was extraordinary, the ideal of a gnarled yet sophisticated technique."

Comment of the Moment: "Second Song" Album by Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts

"Second Song" Album
by Neil Young & Chrome Hearts

Reaction to Neil Young's initial releases of  2 songs from the upcoming album "Second Song" with The Chrome Hearts has been nearly universally praised by fans and the music press thus far.

"Second Song" Video
Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts

Here is a Comment of the Moment on the upcoming album "Second Song" by Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts by Abner:
I have a few thoughts going back to the first time I heard the song.

Nostalgia is maybe not quite right as it constantly intersects with the present. The song places the nostalgic in a deeply problematic relationship to the present, although this is not always literal.

If it was just harkening back to the sunny mornings and saving dimes the song is very different and probably not worth all that much. But beyond this problematic relationship to the present is that the present is placing everything in jeopardy.

There is the immediate fact, within the lyrics, that what we need and want will no longer even be possible. This reality then strips us of our dignity as we are the ones who have destroyed the possibility of a future for both ourselves and everything else.

To me, the center of the song are the lyrics: "but we won't remember them, cause we're the ones who didn't care." If one is really paying attention these lines hit like brass knuckles while there is painful irony with the beauty of the song. The same spirit could provide a bonfire for an electric nightmare of another song.

Second Song is beyond a warning, it is a collision with our reckless actions.
Thanks for the comment Abner. Intrigued by your take on Second Song as "beyond a warning". The tone here on "Second Song" is a bit more subtle than we've heard from Neil in recent years where he's been  borderline sledgehammer (see  "Talkin' To The Trees" album and "Big Change", for example.)

Shirt of the Moment: MOJO Hounds Lead Singer

Cheryl B in Maryland
MOJO Hounds lead singer w/ lead singer of Shocking Pinks
(Click photo to enlarge)

As we continue our Journey Through The Past, Present and Future, it makes us greatly appreciate how much time fades away so quickly.

Our Thrasher's Wheat 30th Anniversary Shirt of the Moment is from our longtime friend and concert buddy Cheryl B in Maryland -- the MOJO Hounds lead singer --- with the lead singer of Shocking Pinks.
The multiple blessings that flowed from meeting Thrasher…

In about 1993/1994, I joined the Rust listserv. I had recently gotten internet access. I first tried The Well, a Grateful Dead community. There was way too much traffic for me to participate. Then I tried a Bob Dylan group. Again, way too much traffic. So I searched around and found Rust.

I met a lot of nice people, but only online, not in person. When the Voters for Choice shows at Constitution Hall featuring Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Pearl Jam and L7 were announced, many of us tried mailing postcards to be selected to purchase tickets. A few of us banded together and promised to offer extras to each other. I made a pact with Thrasher and mailed in about 50 postcards. I was not selected. Legend has it that Thrasher and Thrashette pulled their cul-de-sac together and submitted hundreds of postcards. They ended up with two extra tickets to both shows. Amazingly, they offered me an extra to each night, and I attended and met them in person for the first time. That has blossomed into a friendship and concert-going partnership that has lasted. But the coolest thing is that they also offered an extra to John Kearney, whom I ended up sitting with one night.

John and I continued our friendship, and in late 1995, after meeting up again at a party at my house, I ended up being invited to sit in with John’s band, Mojo Hounds. Thirty years later, I’m still in the Mojo Hounds, and the band frequently plays my original songs.

I saw Neil Young & Crazy Horse with Pearl Jam at a small venue two nights in a row. I met Thrasher and Thrashette, great people and fun friends, and I found one of the greatest joys of my life, Mojo Hounds. I did not ever have singing or songwriting on my bingo card, yet here we are! I can’t thank Thrasher and Thrashette enough for the way they unknowingly changed my life. I am happy to wear a Thrasher’s Wheat shirt and be pictured next to an awesome Neil poster (which I bought from another Rustie!)

Cheryl B

Thanks so much and glad you're enjoying  Cheryl.

Yes, so many memories from the DMV area over the decades.  And who could forget our 1st meetup @ V4C?  Neil, The Horse & Pearl Jam at Constitution Hall, 2 nights.  Epic.

Dolly Parton (1946 - 2026): "After The Gold Rush"

Dolly Parton: 1946 - 2026

From Late Show David Letterman in 1999, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton & Linda Ronstadt singing 'After the Gold Rush' by Neil Young.

A few items to note in performance.  The lyrics change on:
1. "in the nineteen seventies" changed to "in the twentieth century."
2. "And I felt like getting high" changed to "And I felt like I could cry.""getting high"

(Quoting Wikipedia: "Parton also released a solo version of the song in 1996, though her version altered the line 'I felt like getting high' to 'I felt like I could cry' with the permission of Neil Young.")

The Glass Harmonica (or Armonica) was played by Dennis James, who remembers the performance in an interview with Rich Bailey in 2002:
Rich Bailey: I remember when you appeared with her on Letterman and you discussed the Armonica a bit. How was that?

Dennis James: Well, it was a great surprise. A sort of unspoken message in the air to me before the broadcast was "Do not say anything on the air!”. After all, these things are Linda's appearances. When David L. leaned over his desk and directed a question to me I simply froze- on playback of the dub I can see myself caught and unable to speak. I received a glance from Linda that said to me it was OK and so when he tried again I called back a flip one liner and on things went from there.

Here is the original music video of the cover of Neil Young's 'After the Gold Rush' by Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt.

Dolly Parton (1946 - 2026) ... gone but not forgotten.

Tim Pope caught the video wave in 1981 and made hundreds of promotional clips, often three or four a week, edited at night and on-air days later, including videos for Neil Young.

For 15 years he was the man to call – inventive, caffeinated, risk-loving, clubbable – and “nothing was too mad or stupid”. He celebrates that magic age of big budgets and creative freedom in his story-filled memoir ‘I Shoot Rock Stars’, just out, and looks back @:

Shirt of the Moment: "Brother Alan in Seattle"

"Brother Alan in Seattle"

As we continue our Journey Through The Past, Present and Future, it makes us greatly appreciate how much time fades away so quickly.

Our Thrasher's Wheat 30th Anniversary Shirt of the Moment is from "Brother Alan in Seattle".

As so many of you know,  our "Brother Alan in Seattle" really needs no introduction. To say that our "Brother Alan in Seattle" is a prolific commenter here at TW would be a vast understatement.  A true music lover, consumer and concert goer to the utmost degree. We'll always treasure our pilgrimage out to Seattle to hang out with our "Brother Alan".

w/ "Brother Alan in Seattle" - 2023

We should note also that Alan has contributed quite a bit of original, exclusive content to TW for which we're quite grateful. For example:
If you love music, and you're out in Seattle look him up.  He'll be glad to show you the Seattle sounds.

Comment of the Moment: "Second Song" by Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts

"Second Song" Video
Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts

Reaction to Neil Young's release of a video for "Second Song," from his upcoming album with The Chrome Hearts has been nearly universally praised by fans and the music press thus far.

For so many, the nostalgia of the Broken Arrow Ranch in Northern California is viscerally breathtaking. The video shot by Rick Rosas (AKA Rick "The Bass Player") on a drive into the ranch is simultaneously uplifting yet heartbreaking.

With that background, Neil's understated song melody, instrumentation and lyrics combine to bring some to smile, some to cry and everyone to wonder ... thrashers included.

Which brings us to a very special Comment of the Moment by Dan Swan.

As you may recall, Dan has been on a sabbatical -- so to speak  -- from Thrasher's Wheat for awhile.  Often a thoughtful commenter, his words here have been missed.  His return -- for us -- is like the swallows of Capistrano.

Here is the TW Comment of the Moment on VIDEO: "Second Song" | Neil Young Archives by Dan:
I have been away for a really long time here. The reasons are multilayered and difficult to summarize here. But I couldn’t possibly not post about this new song from Neil.

My first reaction was an unmistakable feeling of comfort and reassurance. I fell under the spell of a road trip out to Neil’s ranch. Now; I don’t typically like music videos, but I make an exception in this case, because it truly serves the song. But as usual with Neil, the lyrics are really the focus here.

Neil has always had this tendency to write lyrics that feel more like a stream of consciousness, rather than a specific thing. In this case it plays to the strength of the musical tone of this song.

What it created here for me was a sense of nostalgia and purpose. Combining both without contradicting either one. Yet at the end of the song there’s a message that may seem contradictory. I’m not sure how else to explain it really. It may well be the point of the song to be unresolved in the end. Or perhaps just an open question left for each person to ponder.

All I know for sure is this Second Song affected me in a most profound way. I was drawn into that world, and it touched my spirit in an unexpected way. I felt his presence within the song. It wasn’t just him singing it, he was literally inside of it. And I was privileged enough to be invited in on his journey.

I was transported out of my current situation and spent just over eleven minutes somewhere I wish I could take up permanent residence. A place where perfect is a myth, and possibilities are infinite.

The word masterpiece has become a cliche. But if such a thing is still possible….this would be it.

Peace to All 🙏
Hey Dan, great to hear from you.

Especially for this new song from Neil.  You're right, the video of the drive into Broken Arrow ranch so captures the essence. The vibe. The whole feel of ranch world.

Rick Rosas film comes from the past.

Into the present.

Taking us to future.
Alchemy baby.

Welcome back Dan.

The title track of Neil Young's upcoming album with The Chrome Hearts, "Second Song," now has an official music video release.

The video is shot by Rick Rosas (AKA Rick "The Bass Player") on a drive into the Broken Arrow Ranch in Northern California.  It's unclear when the film was was shot, but the best estimate is sometime around 1990 when Rick was driving into record at the ranch studio.

"Second Song" album will be released on September 18, 2026.

Our Thrasher's Wheat 30th Anniversary T-Shirt of the Moment is from deep in The Heartland by John in Chicago,  "the city where a mild mannered reporter for a daily metropolitan newspaper ekes out a meager existence."

As so many of you know, John has contributed a number of articles to TW over the years -- all of which have been properly compensated with our standard writing fees. As to say pretty much zero, aside from a beer or 2 along the way.

Our Thrasher's Wheat 30th Anniversary T-Shirt of the Moment is from Brad "More Barn" out in
Coastal Oregon.

This is very special for us, as Brad "More Barn" is quite the legend in the Neil Rust world.

As so many of you know, the famous Graham Nash & Neil Young "More Barn" story has reached an almost mythical status -- what with t-shirts, hats and who knows what else blaring the call.

And if that's not enough, we're reminded of those hazy, hot summer days back in the last decade seeing Neil Young Solo @ Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Il on June 30 & July 1, 2018 with our buddy Brad "More Barn".
